Grayson: Summer 2007

RESCUING GRAYSON
(THROUGH A DOG’S EYES)
Grayson came to me during the early Spring of 2003...I had rescued my first weim from a very nice lady, Audrey, from the Nutmeg Weimaraner Rescue about a year before that. Zoe was a beautiful girl approximately 2 years old. She brought so much joy into my life, but sadly, it was only for a very short time, as she was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to take an early journey to doggie heaven in December of 2002. I wanted to wait a while before I got another one of these fine dogs so that I could heal from this very sad loss. I paid attention to the weims who needed homes but wasn’t really ready until early Spring of the following year….Now, when I look back, I realize that I did the right thing. Otherwise, I never would have had the privilege of having Grayson Walker come into my life…
Grayson’s name had been Katjek (which I had to change as I didn’t know what it meant and I couldn’t even pronounce it!) and was in a “high kill shelter” in Long Island…I had contacted Audrey, so she knew that I was looking, but she also wanted to make sure it was a good match….She told me about “Katjek” and he certainly sounded like he would fit the bill….I live in Maine, however, and it would be quite a haul to get him up here to me…..Audrey worked hard to make it possible by contacting different people along the way (between Long Island, N.Y. and Dover-Foxcroft, Me….) It didn’t take her long to get a “team” of very dedicated weim lovers together to transport Grayson all the way from N.Y. to Augusta, Me.
He arrived a bit timid but understandably so since he had seen so many
different new people and new surroundings in such a short time. When Nancy
delivered Grayson to me, she also brought along some pictures…, some of which I
will share…The first picture was taken of him at the shelter in Long Island..
Just seeing that picture made me want to take him to what has become my favorite
spot in the entire world to take my dogs…I live right beside a rural cemetery
with a nice pond that is surrounded by several young white birch trees…..
The fields there go on forever, but just incase that isn’t enough, there are
several trails down behind the cemetery leading to other trails and finally
leading to the Piscataquis River…That’s Grayson sitting on his favorite rock
right next to the river….(quite a contrast from the pics to the left of those.)

And boy, does this dog love to swim!!!!! He would go forever if I let him….One day when we were sitting by the pond, these 2 children came along and started throwing sticks in the water for Grayson, stating that they were going to throw sticks until they “tired him out”….Wow, I think they would still be down there throwing if that were the case…
When the dogs aren’t out romping around outdoors, most generally, you can find them on my bed or on the sofa…Just one small example of that.., here is a pic of me and my dogs before we got Grayson. We are looking relatively comfortable…

And here is what is going on most of the time on the sofa since grayson moved in.
These dogs are so beautiful
in so many ways….One of the best things about me having these dogs, personally,
is they keep me moving…I have had several surgeries on my legs in 1990, 1991 and
1996. If I gave myself some time to think about it, I might have chosen to sit
around and mope;. maybe even feel a bit sorry for myself, but with these dogs, I
don’t have the time. They require tons of exercise and would not understand the
fact that “mom isn’t able to walk them.” therefore, I take them every day unless
it is absolutely pouring out or a blizzard in the winter…They romp around and
play…Grayson loves to fetch sticks from the river (OH, LOOK! He‘s waiting for
one now!!!)…and I do take some time between them working me out, to meditate a
bit….To me, nothing is prettier than the sound of water flowing down a river and
I can’t think of anyone I would rather be enjoying that beauty with than my
weims (and my shihtzu).

Sometimes when I think of my age (hitting 50 next February), I don’t think of it in terms of getting old. Instead, I think of it more in terms of how many more weims I can give a good home to in my lifetime…Hopefully, many more as the love and joy they provide for me far outweigh what I give to them..
Tonite, when I settled down to rest a bit, I thought about how lucky I am to have these great dogs in my home and as a HUGE part of my family….Laying with Grayson on one side of me snuggled up to my back, and Bianca on the other side of me, all I could think about was “a Rose between two WEIMS”….Now life doesn’t get any better than that.
Thank you to all the folks who helped transport Grayson up in to Maine…And a special thanx to Audrey for making this happen.
WEIMS CERTAINLY ARE WONDERFUL.

I would also like to mention my poodle, Chien, who I had for 14 years…The weims really enjoyed him. I miss him terribly but he will always be in my heart.
